New Years
Resolutions... Help is Here...
How are you
doing with your health improvement
resolutions you made just 2 days ago?...
If you are like most of us your January
1st.conviction can easily slip back into
old habits in just a few days… Want to
keep your promises to yourself this
year?... Yes is a great answer!... We
can help make your goals a reality...
Imagine how good that will feel!
What are the
health goals you set for yourself for
2005?
- Loose
weight?
- Stop Smoking?
- Cut your cholesterol?
- Improve your diet
- Work out regularly?
- Restore your general health?
- Improve your appearance?
Well it is a
simple fact that unless you are a highly
motivated person, you may need a little
coaxing to get into action...
I see this
happening every year at my local gym…In
January the place is filled with new
faces and at most times it is crowded
and the popular exercise equipment is
always busy…In February the newcomers
show up less frequently and its only
crowded during peak hours. By March its
back to normal and the crowds have
disappeared and the long term regulars
are the only ones in the place...
What
happened to all those newbie's that were
so diligent about showing up regularly
in January…Well they got side
tracked…found excuses…lost their
enthusiasm and some just plain quit on
themselves...
If this has
happened to you in the past around any
commitment, health, financial or any
other promise to you or your family, I
want to encourage you to get back in the
game and stop feeling guilty… how?… by
taking action now…When you again begin
to take action you will feel so much
better about yourself because those
broken promises simply effect your
entire outlook on life and weigh heavily
on your self esteem, feelings of self
worth and the performance level in all
areas of your life...

Acetyl
L-Carnitine Prevents Age-Related Brain Damage...
NAGOYUA,
Japan- December 22, 2004L-carnitine
supplementation helps reduce
age-related, oxidative DNA damage in the
brain, according to a study published in
the January 2005 issue of Experimental
Neurology (191, 1:33-40) (ww.sciencedirect.com).
Researchers from Nagoyua University
Graduate School of Medicine measured the
activities of antioxidant enzymes, the
levels of nucleic acids and the extent
of DNA damage in the cortex,
hippocampus, striatum, hypothalamus and
cerebellum of young (four months) and
old (24 months) rats given L-carnitine
for either seven, 14 or 21 days. Brain
regions with lower antioxidant activity
are highly susceptible to oxidative DNA
damage, which is a key factor in the
aging process, according to the
scientists. The study results showed L-carnitine
enhanced nucleic acid, antioxidant level
activity in the older rats supplementing
for 21 days. No significant change in
activity was found in either the shorter
supplementation periods or at all in the
younger rats. The research concluded L-carnitine
supplementation prevents age-related DNA
damage, confirming the supplement’s
neuroprotective action against aging.
Each daily dose of our life factors

Easy Exercise, Food
and Plain Old Fat...
Popular
advice tells you to eat less and
exercise more. Today I'd like you to
consider an alternative. The notion that
for food and exercise quality, not
quantity is what's most important.
The advice to eat less and exercise more
just hasn't worked. We spend more on
diet and exercise than any country but
are the fattest nation. Marathon
exercises enrapture very few people. And
we like to eat. Super size please!
Staying fit is not just a matter of
minimizing your food and maximizing
exercise. It's more a matter of quality.
Today, you'll learn how to address the
quality factor in your diet and physical
activity.
Eating
Better
Eat
Quality Fat: Nowhere
is quality more important than with fat.
The problem with the American diet is
not that it has too much fat but the
wrong kind of fat. Bad fat causes
cholesterol problems, clogged arteries,
heart disease, cancer and inflammation.
You should avoid omega 6 fats from fatty
meats - red or otherwise. Eat grass-fed
beef, free-range chickens and wild fish
instead. Don't eat hydrogenated or trans
fats in margarines and processed foods.
Use organic butter and olive oil
instead. Consume plenty of natural
healthy fats in nuts, eggs, avocados and
cold water wild fish. Add omega 3 Oils
as a supplement.
Choose
Quality Protein:
Strive to eat protein with every meal
but chose the highest quality protein
possible. Eggs are the very highest
quality protein followed by red meat..,
The best choice for many reasons is
free-range eggs and grass-fed beef. The
nutritional value of a grass-fed T-bone
is so much greater than a fast food
burger its like comparing apples to
oranges-- even though both are fruits.
Add
Quality Carbohydrate:
If you are like most people you need to
reduce your total carbs. Low carb is
finally catching on but there are
quality carbs and junk carbs. Focus on
eating quality carbohydrates.
If you eat much bread, pasta, potatoes
and rice you'll be shopping in the “Big
Mans” department before long. Yet I
don't know anyone who has s gained
weight from consuming berries, pears,
peaches, tomatoes, spinach, collards or
green beans. These carbs have more
nutrients and fiber and don't produce
the same insulin response. You can eat
low glycemic vegetables and fruits until
you are full.
Here are a few more tips to help you
focus on choosing quality.
• Never grocery shop when you're hungry.
• Stay away from the internal aisles of
the grocery store. This is where all the
refined junk carbs reside.
• Carry along healthy snacks, fruit,
protein bars, Munch on the good stuff.
• Consider a healthy, vitamin and fiber
rich protein drink daily…The best we
have found is at
www.menshealthtech.com
(it is on sale this week)
• When dining out, choose grilled,
baked, poached or broiled over fried.
• Make your own marinades and dressings
instead of pre-bottled ones. Marinades
and salad dressings often have high
fructose corn syrup.
• Cook with olive or canola oil.
• Throw out the vegetable oil.
• Eat butter over margarine.
• If you need a sweet treat, try
snacking on fruit.
• Eat more often, 4-5 times per day.
Maximize the Quality of Your Workout...
Yes you do need to exercise... Bummer...
but here is some great news... Quality,
not quantity matters. Running like a
hamster on a treadmill will not make
your heart strong no matter how long you
do it. Your body interprets endurance
exercise as stress. It causes breakdown
of muscle, internal organs and joints.
Over time it causes injuries. Many clubs
now offer 30 minute circuits and other
less time consuming workout plans, some
you can do I with just a 20-30 minute
workout every other day.
How to
Stay on Track...
• Drink plenty of water before and after
you exercise.
• Schedule your 20-30-minute sessions in
your planner as you would lunch or a
business meeting. This will help you
stick with it.
• Partner up. You are more likely to
workout if you have someone counting on
you to show up. • Incorporate sports into your life.
Team sports build camaraderie and are
better suited for function than endless
lifting sessions in the gym.
• Write it down! Keeping an exercise
journal, keeps you motivated and honest. |

New Study
Confirms Lycopene's Protection Against
Prostate Cancer...
November 24,
2004
Research
provides further evidence of the
mechanism behind lycopene’s protective
role against prostate cancer, giving
extra support for its use in functional
foods and supplements.
The
scientists had previously shown in a rat
study that the powerful antioxdiant may
kill prostate cancer cells by targeting
the male hormone androgen. Their new
study suggests that lycopene, found
naturally in red fruits and vegetables
like tomatoes, also targets androgens in
healthy prostate tissue, suggesting that
it not only fights cancer in this way,
but also reduces the risk of developing
the disease.
Prostate
cancer is one of the biggest cancer
killers in industrial countries and
affects more than 500,000 men worldwide
every year. This number is expected to
increase with the ageing population.
Epidemiological evidence has suggested
that tomato-based foods can protect men
from prostate cancer. One study found
that men eating four to five tomato
based-dishes per week were 25 per cent
less likely to develop prostate cancer
compared to men eating tomatoes only
rarely.
Karin
Wertz, laboratory head at DSM
Nutritional Products, and colleagues
supplemented healthy young male rats
with lycopene for up to eight weeks.
During this time, lycopene accumulated
in the prostate tissue but did not
influence normal prostate development,
they report in the 15 November online
issue of FASEB.
This is
important, since children have a
relatively high lycopene intake from
foods like ketchup, pizza and spaghetti
with tomato sauce.
The
researchers say they demonstrated for
the first time that lycopene reduced the
effect of androgen on the healthy
prostate tissue, as well as signs of
inflammation and expression of the
growth factor IGF-I, regarded as a risk
factor for prostate cancer.
“All of
these mechanisms can contribute to the
epidemiologically observed prostate
cancer risk reduction by lycopene,” they
write.
Earlier
this year, DSM researchers, in
collaboration with the Charité Hospital
in Berlin, Germany, found that lycopene
increased the killing rate of tumour
cells. This effect was accompanied by
repressed androgen signaling, reduced
expression of IGF-I and of the
inflammatory cytokine IL-6.
The new
study demonstrates that lycopene
influences the same mechanisms in
healthy prostate tissue, as found for
prostate tumors, giving a mechanistic
explanation for previous epidemiological
evidence.
A 6-year
study done at Harvard University
involving 50,000 men revealed that those
who ate foods high in lycopene were up
to 45% less likely to develop prostate
cancer.
