Chinese cuisine, long known for the essence of healthy eating, has yielded to the rising popularity of fast food chains. In fact, residents of China are more likely to be seen munching on French fries or a Big Mac than Americans and Australians.

According to a survey -- which involved more than 14,000 adults in 28 countries -- researchers found that 41 percent of
those surveyed who live in China eat in a fast food restaurant once a week, compared with 35 percent of people in the United States and 30 percent of people in Australia.

China is "Lovin' It"

McDonald's has most certainly had a profound affect on China. When the first McDonald's opened in Beijing a dozen years ago, 40,000 people lined up to observe a Big Mac and get their picture taken with the infamous Ronald McDonald. Not to mention:

• McDonald's is growing faster in China than in
  the United States
• McDonald's owns and operates more than 600
  stores across 105 cities in China
• More than 100 more McDonald's stores will be
  added annually to Chinese cities within the
  coming years

Editors note: What people in China, the United States and anywhere around the world must realize is that fast food is damaging your body and your health. Some time ago we told you why men and their doctors should NOT be quick to proceed with a prostate cancer biopsy based on a single prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening. In a recent feature article of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) released a study concluding that PSA screening misses too many cancers. The researchers' recommendation… Lower the acceptable PSA level from 4.0 to 2.6. In other words: Let the biopsies roll!

This is the worst kind of mainstream thinking. With blinders firmly in place, the only reasonable solution these researchers could come up with - in response to a clearly insufficient test - was to sharply INCREASE the number of biopsies. With misguided logic like this, next they'll be saying men should forget about the test altogether and just have yearly biopsies!

Oh come on! It only hurts for a month! Tell that to a friend who has undergone this far too frequently used procedure.

Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed. In an accompanying NEJM editorial, the authors expressed reservations about the simplistic advice, stating that the recommendation should not yet be accepted as "routine clinical practice." This point was also stressed by doctors on various news programs.
You have to wonder though; in spite of the call to show restraint, will this study just encourage those doctors who already have a "slash and burn" mentality about prostate biopsies? It very well could.

When the report was released a local news anchor for one of L A’s most watched T.V. channels stuffed the PSA study into a 20-second snippet… toward the end of the broadcast. After calling PSA screening "the gold standard" of prostate cancer testing, he simplified the matter by saying
that doctors now recommend that more men receive prostate cancer biopsies.

He was doing his job; cutting the story down to its essential details. But I wonder if he has any idea what damage that sort of sloppy reporting can do when men take the bad advice at face value.
