8 Warning
Signs That May Indicate An
Enlarged Prostate (BPH) or
Prostatitis... |
|
The
symptoms of an enlarged prostate are
often painful, embarrassing, and
frustrating. The most common symptom is
a frequent need to urinate, however
there are many specific symptoms to keep
a close eye on.
Here are the eight primary symptoms that
may indicate an enlarged prostate
BPH or Prostatitis |
|
1. A frequent need to urinate,
causing you to get up several
times a night.
2. A weak, often interrupted
urinary stream.
3. A full-bladder feeling, as if
you can never completely empty
your bladder.
4. Difficulty initiating a urine
stream, with involuntarily
dribbling at the beginning or
end.
5. Sudden sometimes
uncontrollable urgency to
urinate.
6. A burning, painful, or
throbbing sensation when
urinating.
7. Loss of libido and sexual
potency, weak sex drive.
8. And of course, blood in the
urine and any pain or discomfort
in the urinary tract can
definitely signal a problem.
If
you experience any of these
symptoms, it could mean you have
a swollen or infected prostate
gland and you may need to see a
urologist. He will likely
examine you to determine if you
do in fact suffer from an
enlarged prostate (bph) or
prostatitis.
Prostrate problems are a serious
concern to any man over the age
of 40.The good news is that
treated early prostate problems
can be overcome or managed
inexpensively. Delay and you
may face the possibility of
prostate cancer, surgery, loss
of your ability to have sex, and
may some day be required to wear
diapers... You can learn more

prostatitis and the many
remedies and treatment options

America's Love for
Junk Food Continues Unabated...
If health
experts and nutritionists were under the
impression that a vast majority of
Americans seem to be appreciating all
the healthy food choices available today
... they may have another thing coming. |
|
According
to a vice president with NPD Group (a
company that keeps track of consumer
eating habits), Americans have always
had the means to eat healthier, they
just lack the will.
Isn't That
the Truth...
More than
47 percent of the money Americans spend
on food in 2005 -- an astounding $476
billion, according to the National
Restaurant Association, will be wasted
away at restaurants. And an NPD Group
report exposed the proof in the bills:
•
Hamburgers were the most popular menu
item ordered by men at restaurants last
year; French fries came in second.
• For women, French fries ranked first,
followed by burgers.
• Pizza ranked third for both genders.
Clearly,
even in a society where people are aware
of the need for healthy habits, most
consumers still appear to have one major
goal when they eat out: indulgence, or
overindulgence that is.
And the
fast-food joints can't complain either:
• Burger
King's breakfast sales jumped 20 percent
thanks to its introduction of the
Enormous Omelet Sandwich -- despite its
730 calories and 47 grams of fat.
• The new
triple-cheese Cheese Stuffed Crust Pizza
at Pizza Hut was such a success that it
took in 20 percent of the chain's
business within four days of its debut.
• KFC is
testing plans to bring back the Kentucky
Fried Chicken name (a.k.a. fried foods),
along with new menu items linked to its
Southern roots.
Thus, the
seemingly bottom line: When most
Americans vote with their forks, the
desire for tasty food continues to
defeat concerns about health and
nutrition.

Is Work Dangerous to Your Health?...
A large
Swedish study indicates that if you
operate under high-pressure deadlines,
it may well be. In the 3,500 person
study, the Stockholm Heart Epidemiology
Programmer (SHEEP), investigators
discovered that men are six times
more likely and women three times more
likely to have a heart attack if they
take on increased responsibilities at
work, especially ones they don't
like. Even more startling is that having
a high-pressure deadline increased heart
attack risk within the next 24 hours by
a factor of six -- meaning that such
people are six times more likely to have
a heart attack than unaffected people.
Given that
so many of us operate under high-stress
deadlines -- both at work and in our
personal lives – According to Dr.
Borysenko, author of 11 books on the
mind-body connection and a frequent
lecturer, explains that when people deal
with extended high-stress situations,
they tend to forget their own needs in
order to focus on the project at hand.
(If you doubt that, think back to
college finals.) That not only makes
you vulnerable to health risks, it also
diminishes the quality of your work,
she says. Nearly 100 years ago, Harvard
researchers came up with the Yerkes-Dodson
law, which shows that people who are
under pressure work more efficiently to
a certain point and then productivity
drops, as she says, like a stone. That
makes taking time to care for yourself a
win-win for everyone.
Dr.
Borysenko says there are three rules to
follow to care for yourself and keep you
focused...
| |
Exercise daily. Simply
walking for 20 minutes early in
the day will bring you a huge
dividend of improved mood and
ability to focus.
Eat three nutritionally sound
meals a day. Include lean
protein at each meal -- the body
uses it quickly under stress --
along with fruits, vegetables
and whole grains.
Take at least 30 minutes
every day for an activity that
centers you. Listening to
classical music, for example,
not as background noise but by
putting your feet up and paying
attention, has been shown to be
as relaxing as 10 mg of Valium.
Meditation, of course, also
works.
Studies show that women can
reduce stress by tending or
befriending, which is why, as
trite as it might sound, calling
a friend or neatening up the
house can be particularly
relaxing in stressful periods
for women. |
|
|
And,
no matter how busy you are, do not
forget to make every effort to get a
full night's sleep.
Taking
care of yourself requires about 50
minutes of your day, says Dr. Borysenko.
But you'll find that you gain a great
deal in the end -- increased
productivity, relaxation and continued
enjoyment of life, even under deadline
pressure.
New FDA Web Site
Exposes Drug Risks to Public...
|
|
|
The Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) may finally be taking a
step in the right direction. After being
publicly scrutinized by Congress, medical
experts and consumers for its slow response to
emerging information about cardiovascular risks
prompted by pain medications, the FDA is
starting to offer risk information to the public
much sooner.
How? The agency has
launched a new Web site,
Drug Watch, which will
issue alerts to patients and doctors regarding
drug safety concerns.
So far, the safety
alerts posted on the site are significant, as
they highlight the risks posed by doctors
prescribing drugs for purposes never approved by
the FDA -- an approach known as "off-label
prescribing."
Making a Change...
The site is
certainly a notable change, considering how the
FDA used to communicate drug risks: For months
or years they privately weighed and debated risk
information with drug companies until a final
decision was made on the scientific significance
of danger.
The agency will
still give drug companies a heads-up before
posting new, potentially damaging information
about safety concerns they find. However:
• The FDA won't
discuss the results with the drug companies.
• The companies
won't have a chance to review it before it's
posted.
But, while the FDA
seems to be making a move in the right
direction, one hang-up remains: The site calls
on patients to find drug information on the
Internet instead of it being given to them when
they pick up prescriptions.

Why Are So Few
Doctors Educated About Nutrition...
You have probably
heard that doctors are not required to learn
very much about nutrition in med school. But
exactly how little they need to know might
surprise you.
In their book
"The Real Age Diet", Drs. Michael F. Roizen and
John La Puma write, "The two of us combined
received fewer than eight hours of education on
nutrition in more than six thousand lecture
hours in medical schools."
Granted, these
two docs were in school more than two decades
ago. But it appears that not much has changed.
According to the book, "at the University of
Chicago, it's still only about twenty-eight
hours of nutrition lectures in twenty-five
hundred lecture hours."
I hesitate to
attribute this to some grand conspiracy by the
medical establishment. But it certainly brings
to mind the common expression "There's no money
in prevention. The money's in the cure."
