Coffee. Not So Bad After all

Even a year ago, few people sipping their morning cup of coffee would have thought of it as a healthful habit. However, new studies linking coffee with a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and liver cancer have made the idea not so far-fetched after all. Given that coffee has never been considered a health food, it is very curious that it should be showing such healthful connections. Thanks to a new study from the University of Scranton, we may be getting some answers.


Researchers there analyzed the antioxidant content of more than 100 different food items including coffee, and, to their surprise, they discovered that coffee has by far the highest number of antioxidants of all beverages including green and black tea. Furthermore, people who drink coffee are actually getting more antioxidants from it than from the other beverages and food they consume on a daily basis. The study reported that the average number of antioxidants people get each day from the five most commonly consumed foods and beverages are:

The Fallout from Negative Vioxx Studies Continues

The editors of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) have published more criticism of a Vioxx study funded by Merck, the drug's manufacturer.

The editors of the Journal allege that if the study had disclosed all of the heart-related side effects of the painkiller Vioxx, it would have shown that the benefits of the drug were negated by the problems.

Failure to Disclose
This expands on NEJM's earlier revelation that the study had failed to disclose several heart attacks that occurred among patients taking Vioxx, rendering the study's calculations and conclusions incorrect.

Letters from Merck
The NEJM also published two letters to the editor, one from Merck-employed scientists, arguing that the data was handled appropriately because the heart attacks had occurred after a specified cutoff date. The letters also claimed that the additional heart attacks did not affect the study's conclusions.

Five Times the Heart Attacks
When the additional data is factored in, the heart attack rate of Vioxx consumers rises from four times to five times the rate of those taking naproxen, a comparative drug.

The editorial states that at least two authors of the study were aware of the information more than four months prior to the study being published.

Plant Sterol Pills Significantly Lower LDL Cholesterol

Improved Soybean Oil Isn't Good For You

The heart risks of trans fat has sparked greater demand for a new variety of soybean oil, to the extent that food companies have recruited farmers to grow more of the new genetically modified soybeans.

No wonder companies are frantically searching for alternatives, considering the FDA's edict that processed food products must now list the amount of trans fats they contain.

The new soybeans contain lower levels of the acids that make food stale or rancid, meaning their oil does not need hydrogenation, the process the creates trans fats. Most soybeans contain roughly 7 percent linolenic acid. The new varieties contain 1 to 3 percent.

Why these so-called healthier vegetable oils are a disastrous choice for most people: They can contain as much as 100 times the level of harmful omega-6 fats, far in excess of the average American's intake of more beneficial omega-3 fats.

Around 1900, Americans ate less than a pound of processed vegetable oil annually. Just last year, the average American ate more than 80 pounds, largely thanks to processed fast food using oils like these. Excessive consumption of omega-6-laden vegetable oils can lead to heart disease and cancer.

One crucial way to right-size your intake of more beneficial omega-3 fats: Take a high-quality fish oil daily. And in addition, avoid processed foods, which frequently contain heated vegetable oils containing high quantities of omega-6 fats and other dangerous ingredients. Need to Lose Weight? Hate to Exercise? How About 1 Hour per Week!

1. Leg press or squat
2. Dumbbell bench press (if at home) or chest
    press machine (if at the gym)
3. Bent-over row (home) or rowing machine (gym)
4. Dumbbell shoulder press (home) or shoulder
    press machine (gym)
5. Fly’s-standing with 2 dumbbells ( home) or
    seated at the gym
6. Incline dumbbell bench press (home) or incline
    chest press machine (gym)
7. Crunches (mini set ups)

Aerobic exercise: Only two times per week, 15 minutes per session (aerobics can be anything that gets the heart rate up to 50% to 75% of maximum heart rate for your age -- running, jogging, walking, swimming, step class, etc.).
