Good News! We are Winning the Soda Wars

For the first time in 20 years, the amount of soda sold in the United States has dropped. Sales of cases of soda went down 0.7 percent, to just over 10 billion cases. Coca-Cola Classic sales declined by 2 percent, and original Pepsi sales decreased by 3.2 percent.

Part of the reason for the decrease is attributed to the criticisms of soda's contribution to the growing problem of obesity among teens and children. Other reasons cited have been dislike of the taste and concerns about artificial sweeteners. Some forecasters predict that soda sales will continue to decline at a small but steady pace over the next few years.

Soft drinks are still the most consumed beverage in America, but they are losing ground to bottled water, sports drinks, and energy drinks.

Fast-Food Ice That's Dirtier Than Toilet Water!

There are a number of reasons I order bottled water at restaurants. I'm adding this to the list, and will continue the practice. Read why.

Some time ago I read an article about 12-year-old Jasmine Roberts and her winning project for a regional science fair. Jasmine collected samples of ice from the self-service dispensers and drive-through windows at five fast-food restaurants near Tampa, Florida. The budding scientist then collected samples of water from toilets in the same restaurants. All of the samples were placed in sterile containers and sealed.

Jasmine took her samples to a laboratory at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center (where she's a volunteer). And with the help of a professor, she analyzed the samples to determine their bacteria content.

What she found was that the water from the ice machines had more bacteria than the toilet water at four out of the five restaurants. And not only did the ice contain more bacteria, Jasmine found that the ice included fecal coliform (E. coli). something you might expect in the toilet, but not exactly what you want in your Sprite.

The Best Way to Eat Yogurt

If you think you're being virtuous by snacking on yogurt, you might be in for a surprise. Most yogurts, including the "fruit on the bottom" variety, are sweetened with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. This spikes your blood sugar and adds unnecessary calories. And certain "sugar-free" varieties aren't much better. They can contain aspartame or sucralose, which are both unhealthy artificial sweeteners.

So, how can you enjoy yogurt without the unwelcome additions? 8 Warning Signs That May Indicate An Enlarged Prostate (BPH) or Prostatitis

Getting Enough Sunshine?
